CD Tenerife B 2-1 CD Estepona: Two Penalties Deny the Rojillos a Win in Tenerife

CD Estepona lost 2-1 to CD Tenerife B at the Ciudad Deportiva Javier Pérez on Matchday 4 of Group IV of Segunda RFEF. The Estepona team, which responded to Omar Sánchez’s opening goal with a goal by Sandji Baradji, had chances to take the lead during a very open second half, but another penalty in the closing minutes allowed the Tenerife side to take home the three points.
The match, played this Sunday, September 27, at 12:00 p.m. (peninsular time), pitted two teams against each other that were coming into the game with different momentum but were separated by only a few points in the standings. CD Tenerife B entered the matchday with six points out of a possible nine, while CD Estepona was looking to add to its tally following its victory last matchday against Salerm Puente Genil.

A Tough Start for CD Estepona

The match began with Tenerife B trying to take the initiative, although CD Estepona started off strong and sought to press and contest possession in the opponent’s half from the very first minutes.
However, the match took a turn for the worse very early on. In the 6th minute, referee Alejandro Martínez Ibáñez called a penalty in favor of the home team following a play in which José Antonio Caro was shown a yellow card. A minute later, Omar Sánchez stepped up to take the penalty and put the score at 1-0.
The goal forced the Costa del Sol side to fight back from the very start. Tenerife B could have even extended their lead just a few minutes later, but Fran Martínez made a great save in the 10th minute to prevent the home team from widening the gap.
CD Estepona, despite the early blow, didn’t lose their composure. As the minutes ticked by, they began to find spaces and push higher and higher up the field. Manolo Sánchez had already noted in the preview that he expected a match full of scoring chances, and that’s exactly how it played out.

Estepona Fights Back and Finds the Equalizer

The Rojillos began creating more danger midway through the first half. In the 27th minute, one of the first clear chances came for the visiting team, with Pablo Aguilar at the center of it.
Two minutes later, Pablo Arriaza received a yellow card, before CD Estepona finally saw their comeback efforts rewarded.
In the 35th minute, the equalizer came. Ale Contreras sent in a ball from a corner kick, and Sandji Baradji rose above the defense in the box to connect with a powerful header, making it 1-1 and bringing Estepona back into the game.
The goal definitively changed the momentum of the match. Tenerife B had started out dominating certain stretches, but CD Estepona managed to take control and began to find their attacking players more frequently.
Before halftime, there was still time for another chance for the red-and-whites. In the 42nd minute, Álvaro Yuste nearly made it 1-2 with a header, though the score remained unchanged.
The score remained 1-1 at halftime, following a first half in which both teams had their moments and in which CD Estepona had managed to respond positively to the home team’s early goal.

An open second half with chances for both sides

Manolo Sánchez made substitutions right at the start of the second half. Jorge Álvarez and Julen Jon Guerrero entered the game in place of Samu Expósito and Pablo Arriaza.
The match then entered a much more open phase. Tenerife B tried to regain control, while CD Estepona found spaces to run into and attack.
In the 48th minute, Titi received a yellow card, and shortly after, in the 55th minute, Sandji Baradji was booked. The forward, who had set up the equalizer, was playing a key role in the red-and-white team’s offensive plays.
In the 58th minute, another substitution took place for the visiting team: Maxi Benites replaced Titi.
Tenerife B began to threaten Fran Martínez’s goal, and in the 61st minute came one of the clearest chances of the early second half: a shot by the home team crashed off the crossbar.
CD Estepona was also creating its own chances. In the 65th minute, Ariel Herrero entered the game to replace Pablo Aguilar, looking to inject some freshness into the attack.
And shortly after, they came close to scoring their second goal.

CD Estepona Had the Chance to Make It 1-2

The red-and-whites had several clear chances during the second half that could have changed the outcome of the match.
In the 69th minute, Ariel Herrero came close to scoring the second goal. The forward had a good chance, but the home team’s goalkeeper managed to prevent the goal.
A minute later, Manolo Sánchez made his final substitution: Roi Tato came on for David Ballarín.
CD Estepona continued to press for a goal and, in the 75th minute, had a double chance. The visiting team was making dangerous runs into Tenerife B’s box, and the match was wide open.
Jorge Álvarez had a chance following a well-worked play, but his volley sailed over the crossbar, while Ariel Herrero tried his luck again with a shot that was stopped by the home goalkeeper.
The clearest chance came from Alberto González, on a play that began and ended with him. His shot looked set to make it 1-2, but a Tenerife B defender managed to clear the ball off the line with a header.
Tenerife B, for its part, continued to pose a threat. The home team hit the post again in the second half, while Fran Martínez continued to play a key role in keeping Estepona in the game.

The Second Penalty Decides the Match

As the match entered its final stretch, the play that would ultimately decide the game unfolded.
Around the 82nd minute, the referee called a second penalty in favor of CD Tenerife B. The home team once again turned to Omar Sánchez, who had converted the first penalty kick.
The forward didn’t miss this time either.
Omar Sánchez converted the second penalty in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1, also scoring a brace from the penalty spot.
CD Estepona tried to mount a comeback in the final minutes and pushed for the equalizer until the very end, but the score remained unchanged.
The referee added five minutes of stoppage time, and despite the visitors’ efforts, the match ended with a 2-1 victory for CD Tenerife B.

A Match Decided from the Penalty Spot

The result leaves the impression of a missed opportunity for CD Estepona after they managed to equalize and had chances to take the lead.
The statistics reflect a fairly even match in several categories. Tenerife B finished with 54% possession compared to CD Estepona’s 46%, although during the first half the Rojillos even had slightly more possession, with 51% compared to the home team’s 49%.
Both teams finished with four corner kicks, while Tenerife B recorded five shots on goal compared to three by CD Estepona. The Malaga-based team, for its part, had five shots off target compared to four by the home team.
There was also a fairly even split in fouls, with 14 by Tenerife B to 13 by CD Estepona, although the red-and-whites received more yellow cards: five to the blue-and-whites’ two.
The match, therefore, came down to small details and, especially, to Tenerife B’s effectiveness from the penalty spot.

Manolo Sánchez’s Post-Match Comments

After the match, Manolo Sánchez assessed his team’s performance and noted that the game had played out exactly as he had expected before kickoff: a match with plenty of scoring chances and back-and-forth action.
The coach felt that his team gradually found their rhythm after the initial shock and had moments where they were able to impose their style of play, especially as the first half progressed.
Manolo also noted that CD Estepona could have even gone into halftime with the lead given the chances they created, though he acknowledged that soccer is also about effectiveness.
Regarding the second half, the coach explained that there were phases in which the team had to defend deep as a unit, but he also insisted that the Rojillos had two very clear chances to have changed the score.
The coach also refused to use the condition of the field or physical fatigue as an excuse for the loss. For Manolo, the match should have been decided earlier by capitalizing on the available scoring opportunities.
Regarding the penalty kicks, the coach acknowledged that the first one seemed debatable to him and that, from his vantage point, the second one raised even more doubts, as he believed there might have been a moment when the opposing player pulled his leg back. However, he made it clear that he did not want to use the referee as an excuse, although he did feel that the two penalties warranted further analysis.

CD Estepona Remains on Four Points

With this loss, CD Estepona has four points after the first four matchdays of Group IV of Segunda RFEF.
The Estepona team leaves Tenerife empty-handed after competing for much of the match, fighting back from a 1-0 deficit, and creating enough chances to have secured a positive result at the Ciudad Deportiva Javier Pérez.
Their next match will take place on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., when CD Estepona hosts CD Don Benito in another league match.
The Costa del Sol side will then look to earn points again and put the defeat in Tenerife behind them.
