But if there’s one match that holds a special place in the memories of many Estepona fans, it’s undoubtedly the 2-2 draw on November 22, 1992.

That day, Estepona took the lead in the 3rd minute thanks to Juanma. Xerez equalized on a penalty kick in the 30th minute and took the lead in the 57th minute.

Just when it seemed the three points were slipping away from San Fernando, Joaquín stepped up in the 87th minute. The Estepona player took a powerful free kick that found the back of the net past Xerez’s excellent goalkeeper at the time, Santi Esteban, who could barely react to that true rocket of a shot.

That sealed the 2-2 tie.

Juanma’s goal also held historical significance: it was CD Estepona’s 100th goal in Second Division B.

But that match didn’t really end with the final whistle.

According to fans who were there that day, Xerez supporters belonging to a young fan club called Ultras Sherry made their way to Estepona. Tensions ran high during the match, and, according to these accounts, objects and beer glasses were thrown at Estepona players and fans.

Joaquín’s equalizer in the 87th minute sparked a celebration.

Estepona fans rushed onto the field at the old San Fernando stadium to celebrate the goal alongside their players, especially the fans positioned behind the goal facing the Santo Tomás de Aquino sports complex.

And then came the worst.

As fans were leaving the stadium, clashes broke out between supporters of both teams. According to eyewitness accounts, the incidents resulted in several fans being injured and taken to the hospital in Marbella.

The repercussions of what happened were so significant that that very same night, the well-known radio journalist José María García—whose program was one of the most popular of the time—mentioned the incidents that occurred after the match.

It has been 34 years.

The San Fernando field still stands, but it is no longer the stadium that hosts the city’s first team. Although, curiously, just two seasons ago it had to temporarily serve as the home of CD Estepona again for three matches, due to the installation of new turf at the Muñoz Pérez Stadium.

And the return was successful—one win and two draws—against three storied teams: Balompédica Linense, Linares, and Orihuela.

The 1992 match is one of those games that those who were there have found hard to forget.

But precisely for that reason, the memory should also serve to help us look forward and keep in mind something much more important: it’s just soccer. The rivalry may be intense, the passion enormous, and the team colors different, but violence has no place here.

Tonight, the Muñoz Pérez will once again be a red cauldron.

The stage for another chapter in the history between CD Estepona and Xerez CD.

The goal: to win and rewrite history.
