The Return of the Prodigal Son

There are matches that mean more than just three points—matches that connect the present with the past and turn a soccer game into a story of memories, lessons learned, and paths that cross once again. For Jorge Álvarez, CD Estepona’s upcoming match against Marbella FC will be one of those days.
A native of Marbella, the Rojillo player will return to what has been his home for the past five seasons. There, he played 150 matches and experienced a period he will find hard to forget. It wasn’t just a place to compete; it was the setting where he grew as a player and where he experienced some of the most intense emotions this sport has to offer.
Wearing the Marbella team’s jersey, he played in all three divisions of national soccer in which the team competed: Tercera RFEF, Segunda RFEF, and Primera RFEF. He played a key role in two consecutive promotions (2022–23 and 2023–24) that marked the club’s growth and left an indelible mark on his career.
However, soccer also showed him its harshest side. In its last two seasons, both in Primera RFEF, the club experienced two contrasting outcomes: a historic survival in 2024/25 and a cruel relegation in 2025/26. The joy of achieving a goal that seemed extraordinary and the pain of realizing, afterward, that all that effort doesn’t always bring the expected reward.
Five seasons go a long way. To celebrate, to suffer, to learn, and to build bonds that endure even when paths diverge. Jorge left Marbella with a backpack full of experiences, after having been part of an important chapter in the club’s recent history. But that farewell wasn’t the end; it was the closing of one chapter before beginning another.
Because Jorge Álvarez left CD Estepona as a boy, during the 2021–22 season, and has returned this season as a man. Between those two periods, five years of soccer, growth, and experiences have passed—all of which have helped shape the player he is today. Coming home doesn’t always mean returning to the same place: sometimes it means reconnecting with one’s roots after having traveled the necessary path to mature.
And on that path, CD Estepona reappears—the club where he began a chapter that he is now resuming from a different perspective. His return has also been a reunion with fans who consider him one of their own. Jorge is one of the players most beloved by the red-clad fans—a bond that makes his return more than just a simple addition to the roster.
This weekend, however, his heart will have to coexist with the competition. Facing him will be his hometown team, the one with which he played for five seasons, appearing in over a hundred matches and experiencing moments that go far beyond mere statistics. It will be a time to reconnect with former teammates, with memories of past seasons, and with a crest that is part of his history.
But now he wears different colors. Jorge has returned to Estepona, and his present is tinged with red. The past will remain there, with its joys and its wounds, but soccer always offers a new page to write.
Marbella will be the site of the reunion; Estepona, the crest he defends today. Between the two, the story of a soccer player who once again crosses paths with his past while continuing to build his future.
