Bakary Sow discusses his adjustment and CD Estepona's goals in the fifth episode of the podcast

The fifth episode of the second season of the Club Deportivo Estepona podcast is now available and features a special guest: Bakary Sow, a winger on the first team. During the interview, hosted by Álvaro Carrasco, the player reflects on his arrival at the red-and-white club, his adjustment to senior-level soccer, the team’s current situation, and the goals set for this season.
Bakary Sow: An Adjustment Marked by the Team’s Support
The CD Estepona winger began by discussing the 2-2 draw against Ciudad de Lucena at the Francisco Muñoz Pérez Stadium. Sow acknowledged that the result left a bittersweet taste, as the team felt it had done enough to earn the three points, especially given the chances created during the first half.
The player highlighted the mentality of a team that never gives up and always looks to keep attacking, regardless of the score. He also addressed the two controversial plays in which he was involved: the goal that was disallowed for offside and the corner kick that led to Lucena’s equalizer. Regarding the latter, he insisted that the ball had not completely gone out of bounds.
On a personal level, Sow spoke highly of the minutes he played against Ciudad de Lucena, noting that he felt very comfortable on the field thanks to the support of his teammates.
One of the main topics of the interview was his arrival at CD Estepona during the final days of the transfer window. The winger explained that his agent had outlined the club’s sporting vision to him and that he didn’t hesitate to accept the offer, especially after learning about the club’s ambition and its goal of competing for promotion.
The player also acknowledged that he initially had some reservations about making the leap from the youth academy to senior soccer, but that the warm welcome from the locker room made his adjustment much easier. “The group I’ve seen in the locker room is top-notch,” he emphasized, highlighting the positive atmosphere he’s found since his arrival.

From Sevilla to CD Estepona: The Leap to Senior Soccer
Bakary Sow also explained how his departure from Sevilla came about, where he had completed preseason training before joining the Estepona squad on the final day of the transfer window.
The player acknowledged that the change represented a significant challenge, as it was his first experience on a senior team. However, he was surprised by the structure and resources he has found at CD Estepona, noting that he has barely noticed any differences compared to his previous time in Sevilla’s youth academy:
“Everything you find in a youth academy or at a club is here. I’m really surprised.”
He also had positive things to say about Manolo Sánchez and his approach to the game. Sow explained that he identifies with an offensive style of play, based on attacking and constantly seeking out the opponent’s goal.
In this regard, he spoke about his adaptation to the wing-back position, a role different from the winger position he usually played. The player assured that he isn’t having any difficulties, as the coach’s system allows wing-backs to take on very offensive roles. He also emphasized that he enjoys contributing to defensive duties.

The Fans and the Recent Match Against Atlético Antoniano
Another aspect Bakary wanted to highlight was the atmosphere at the Francisco Muñoz Pérez Stadium. The winger admitted that he’s been surprised by the crowd turnout and the support the team receives during matches, comparing it to his previous experience in Seville.
“People here are really into soccer, and I really like that,” he said, thanking the Rojillos fans for their support and encouraging them to continue backing the team throughout the season.
The interview also served to analyze the recent league match against Atlético Antoniano, a game the player expected to be challenging due to the field’s conditions. Sow, who is already familiar with the field from his previous stint at Sevilla, noted that it will be important to adapt to its dimensions and pay special attention to the penalty areas and set-piece situations.
Despite the difficulty of the away trip, the winger assured that the team is ready to face the match and seek another victory.
Finally, he also spoke about settling into Estepona as a city, highlighting the beach in particular, and left a message of confidence for the fans:
“We need all of you—come out, cheer us on, and we’re sure to achieve our goal.”
